This time I’ll show you how to make a highlighter. A decoden highlighter to be more specific. 😊
If you’re wondering what decoden is, it’s a way of decorating phone cases so that they look like they’re covered with frosting. I thought why not do the same with a highlighter. ✨ So in this post I will show you both: how to make a highlighter and how to decorate the compact in a decoden style. Let’s go.
What you’ll need:
- Dust mask
- A cup to mix pigments
- A little spoon or something else to mix pigments with
- Measuring spoons
- Press tile (tkb trading)
- Tin pans (both diy cosmetics and tkbtrading sell them)
- Preservative (tkbtrading.com)
- Binder (tkbtrading.com)
- Glycerin and avocado oil (this is optional)
- Press base (tkbtrading.com)
- Mineral pigments: moon light, icicle and mymix genna (tkbtrading)
- rubbing alcohol
How to make a Highlighter at home
First make sure you have everything you need in front of you. Then put on your gloves and a dust mask on. Dust mask is very important as it will protect you from breathing in the mineral pigments.
Next take out your cup and mix all the ingredients together.
- 1tsp of press base
- 28 scoops of moonlight (these are the little scoops from tkb trading. 1 scoop=0.15cc)
- 17 scoops of icicle
- 6 scoops of mymix genna
- 8 drops of preservative
- 30 drops of the binder
- 14 drops of glycerin(optional)
- 6 scoops of avocado oil(optional)
If you’re not using avocado oil and glycerin, then just add some more binder instead. 💧
I mixed the powders first and then added the liquids and mixed everything together. You can do it this way or just mix everything at the same time.
Keep mixing the highlighter until it becomes an even mixture. Make sure there are no beads or clumps and the color is even. 🌷
tip: if you’re having a hard time mixing the highlighter just add few drops of rubbing alcohol to it. This will help it mix easier.
At this point the highlighter might look more pink, almost like a blush. 💗 Don’t worry, it’s still a highlighter. ✨ It’s just a bit damp from all of those liquids but once you press it in the tin it will look more like its true color.
Next take out your tin pan and disinfect it with a drop of rubbing alcohol. 💧 This can be purchased at any pharmacy as well as many grocery stores, Walmart, target and such.
Then it’s time to scoop out the loose highlighter into the tin. I did this little by little. First I put enough to cover the bottom of the tin. Then I covered the tin with a clean paper towel, placed a press tile over it and applied firm and even pressure onto the press tile. Then I added more highlighter and repeated this until all of the highlighter was neatly pressed in the tin.
This is it for the highlighter itself. 🎉🎉🎉 Now lets decorate it.
How to Make a Highlighter Frosting | DIY Decoden Highlighter
Here’s what you’ll need:
- The compact (www.diycosmetics.com)
- Nail file
- Nail polish(optional)
- Pigments to color the decoden whip cream
- 100% silicone (home depot)
- Caulking gun (home depot)
- Resin donuts (ebay and amazon sells them)
- Star piping tip (Wilton #21 works great)
- Ziploc bag or disposable piping bag
- Super glue
- a disposable cup to mix a silicone in
- plastic spoon
First step here is to use a nail file on the top surface of the compact to roughen it up. This will help the silicone stick better to the surface.
After I did that I wiped the compact with alcohol to remove any debris. 💦 Then I applied nail polish on top of the compact in little dots. 💅 (This step is optional).
Next you want to prepare your ziploc bag. Just cut the corner of it and insert the piping tip through the inside into the corner. It should stay there securely. If it feels wobbly you can tape it on the outside.
Once your ziploc bag is ready, it’s time to start mixing the silicone. Put about 4 pumps of the silicone into a disposable cup. I actually didn’t have any of those so I ended up using the bottom part of the plastic bottle to mix the silicone in. Lol.
Then add pink pigment into the silicone and mix it all together. 🌷 I used a plastic spoon to mix this. You can also use Popsicle sticks or other plastic utensils. The pigment for this doesn’t have to be makeup grade since it goes on the outside of the highlighter.
Once everything is mixed I used the same plastic spoon to scoop it into the ziploc bag. Then I pushed it closer to the corner where the piping tip was.
Time to decorate
Tighten the end of the bag and start squeezing it making a circle in the center of the compact. After the circle is filled in and all the silicone in the bag is gone, add the little resin donuts into the decoden frosting. 😍 Once cured, the silicone will hold them in place. Then add few more pumps of silicone this time directly into the bag since it doesn’t need to be mixed with any pigments. Make another circle of frosting on the outside. Now you just gotta leave this to cure overnight.
The next morning you want to take a superglue, your decorated compact and the highlighter tin. Open the compact, place a drop of glue into the center of it and gently place the tin with highlighter on top of the glue. No need to press it. Since superglue dries pretty fast your highlighter will be ready in just several minutes.
Now it can be swatched and applied on your face and body.
If you’re wondering how I made that lotus flower it’s actually very easy. I used a makeup stencil (polishedvino.com) and nyx glitter primer to give it extra pop. 🌷✨ The glitter primer was only used on the lotus flower. Everywhere else it’s just the highlighter by itself.
Btw Thanks for stopping by my blog and have an awesome day. 😃
